BT faces £600m legal case after the Competition Appeal Tribunal approved a bid to launch a class action compensation claim against them on behalf of over two million current and former customers. The case is being brought forward by Justin Le Patourel, the founder of consumer group Collective Action on Landlines (Call), who claims BT’s landline-only customers are owed hundreds of pounds, many of whom are older and from low-income households.
In 2017, Ofcom investigated BT and discovered that it had overcharged its landline customers between 2015 and 2018. The firm cut the cost of its line rental from £18.99 to £11.99 a month in 2018 as a result. However, BT was not asked to pay compensation to customers who had been paying the higher price tag.
